Exodus Resources

The word Exodus means what you think, the meaning is rooted in the Hebrew word, “to go out”.

The story starts with an enslaved, powerless, stateless people and ends with those same people called and on the move to the promised land, worshipping and enjoying the magnificent presence and immanence of God. It is a “transition from slavery to worship (which) is accomplished through a very great redemption, which is at the centre of this book.” (W.J. Dumbrell)

The book is dominated by the theme of knowing God. Through actions and words God makes Himself known – moving from being a distant deity to a close neighbour. (T. Desmond Alexander, Exodus Commentary)

“For Jesus and the New Testament writers Exodus (and the other books of the “Old” Testament) was a living resource for understanding God, God’s ways in the world, and God’s ways with us.” John Goldingay in Exodus for Everyone.

So, as you become familiar with Exodus, may the Lord reveal Himself to you too, leading you out of enslavement into worship and into a radical life following the One who is both Sovereign and Saviour.
